21. Comic Strip Darrin Bell Rudy Park 2016-06-19 short

Caption: Give me whatever and make it fast. What? What do you mean? My wife gave me ten minutes of freedom for Father's Day. And I burned through three of those just sprinting over here. We have four children and a fifth one any day now. She's tired in bed so I'm on 24/7 kid duty. I haven't left the house, taken a shower, or gone potty by myself since 2015. My ear hairs are skinny secret babies that whisper to me at night that I may be going insane. So for Father's Day, my loving wife granted me ten fleeting moments of me-time, which I choose to spend buying expensive coffee in a run-down cafe, like I used to do when I was young and single and had all the time in the world. Mom wants to know when you'll be back. Tell the short person I can't hear it for another 5 minutes and 48 seconds! Sometimes I'm glad I can't even get a date.

Caption: I'll admit, yesterday I was off my game. I made a rookie mistake and you bested me, nemesis. But I'll take comfort in the fact that the internet has ruined your ability to convert short-term memories into long-term ones. Today's Special Latte + 1hr web $12.50. You won't recall minute details of your day ... All you'll remember are the parts that stick out most, such as me yelling ... you're such a loser! Joke's on you, I won't even remember that.

Caption: You short-changed me when I paid for my drink last week. Are you sure? Of course I'm sure. You gave me change for $10, but I now I gave you more than a ten-dollar bill. Sorry about that. How much did you give me? I distinctly remember I had nothing but $1,000 bills in my wallet. Not falling for it.

Caption: Today on the Ask Sadie show, we'll be addressing one single topic: "Star Wars." Specifically, we'll be talking about how most of you freaks who were obsessed with it for months are no longer talking about it. YOU PEOPLE TODAY HAVE THE ATTENTION SPAN OF A CHIMPANZEE!!! That's an average of about 20 seconds, for those of you who still remember what I just said.

Caption: Good morning, Rudy. I suppose you're wondering why I've summoned you. I like licorice. It's time for your annual performance review. In short, you've done very well this year. Thank you, boss. You're friendly, punctual, and well-groomed. You follow direction acceptably, you've shown initiative, and you brew a fine cup of coffee. Those are the pluses. There's only one negative, really. Only 1.3 percent of your social media posts and comments have been about me or the cafe, and of those only 94% have been positive. An overwhelming 6% have been neutral. The only thing keeping me from firing you is, 0% have been negative. Just thought of a negative. I'm also not thrilled about that cute kitten you re-tweeted in February. I'm more of a piranha man.

Caption: You're on "Ask Sadie." What's your problem?! I met this lady. Sparks flew. She's married and I'm married. But again .... sparks really flew. Am I wrong for thinking life's too short, and we should seize our moments of happiness whenever we can? First of all, keep in mind that if you're every found out, sparks are going to fly again.

Caption: Open mike night presents Sadie Cohen. Summer's almost over … baseball season's nearly done. The time is growing short to see the man-meat hit home runs. Their rippling biceps swinging wooden bats hard through the air … their quadriceps pump, unbridled, while I sit there and stare. And when they slide into home plate, there's always a slim chance ... that if they slid in wrong, they're a-gonna split their pants! I don't think I'll ever be able to un-hear that.

Caption: What's your question for "Ask Sadie"? What's with that senseless riot in Baltimore? What do you mean? America has a long history of self-destructive riots in response to police brutality. It's senseless to call it senseless. A city is like a human body. If you feed a body an awful diet of abuse and unaccountable cops, that body's eventually going to have a massive coronary. In short: Learn your history! And eat oatmeal! Oat ... What? What are you talking about?

Caption: Open Mike Night Presents Future Guy. They hitched rides in on Halley's Comet every time it's near. Living nanites masquerading as technology … depending on the gullibility of you and me. 200,000 years of riding horses and buggies … and suddenly we're 3-D printing tools and cars and trees? They're everywhere, just biding the time to finish their big plan. They're in your phones, your watch, your cars, and they are nearly done. The brain ... the AI ... will arrive ... in 2061. (July 28th to be exact ... that, my crew, is a natural fact). I'm warning you this way 'cause it's the only way, you see. For some reason, they get confused by rhymes and poetry. In short, I've come to warn you, evolution's happening. You want your kids to survive it? Teach them how to rap ... pening. That was close. Odd ... My phone lit up for no reason, and then went back to sleep.

Caption: I've got to make an offering to the cheapskate muse. What's that got to do with me? You understand women. What could I do to bring back my goddess of inspiration? That's nice. What's nice? Goddess of inspiration. You mind if I use that line on this hottie I met when I was trolling for broads at the bus station? This is not helping! No, it is. Don't sell yourself short.

Caption: I just audited your books. Your register came up five cents short, Rudy. It did? Oops. "Oops" is right. I'll have to take that out of our pocket. Whatever. That's fine with me. Since it happened in 2001, that comes out to $298 when you factor in compound interest and opportunity cost. Very bad man.

Caption: THIS JUST IN: Nothing new happened today. Opinion polls are unchanged … No missing people were found … no new ones went missing … there were no shootings … the weather is the same as yesterday … Russia hasn't begun any new invasions, no natural disasters have struck, nobody "stood their ground" in Florida ... ... No celebrities have done anything dumb ... ... There are no new rumors about the next iPhone ... ... In short, we have 24 hours to fill and nothing to talk about. What's that mean? Stay tuned for expert analysis.

Caption: To recap: Rudy lost a cellphone inside the café. Low on batteries, the phone began to periodically beep. But it couldn’t be located because the sound was just too short. Was it under a couch cushion? In a drawer? The trash? All that was certain was the ensuing madness. Will it go away if I move to deep space? BEEEP. It is quiet in outer space. BEEP. Only headgear I could find at my house. Left over from a date. BEEEP (weird).

Caption: What's that annoying sound? BEEEP. I've figured it out! I lost one of my cell phones. It's somewhere in the café and is low on batteries, so it's beeping to let us know to recharge it. BEEEP. So follow the sound of the beep to find the phone. BEEEP. I can't! The sound is too short to follow. So call the phone and follow the ring. Ringer's off! Madness to ensue ...
