Caption: I looked up that Ralph Waldo Emerson quote. He said … To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment. I wonder if he'd have said that if he hadn't died in 1882. I'm not sure marching to the beat of one's own drummer is as great an accomplishment as walking on the moon, for instance. Shhh. Gilligan Island be on.

Caption: I'm not entirely sure I'm conscious, doc. It occurred to me last night, I am not an individual. I am a colony of 32 trillion individual living cells. Dr. Noodle … each of which lives, breathes, performs tasks, and quite possibly considers itself to be a conscious individual with free will. The thought reminded me of when I was in the army. Each of us was an individual cell focused on an individual task ... but before we knew it, because of the decisions made unbeknownst to any of us grunts ... the body of us, the colony we all comprised ... had marched across Europe, and swum across the Pacific, and liberated half the world ... maybe I prescribed you a little too much Cannabis. You may think you thought that thought, but you're just an antibody reflexively protecting the colony.

Caption: If you could go back in time ten years, but you couldn't come back, and you would not be ten years younger … would you do it? Only if I were an idiot. But if you went into the past, you could invest wisely and get rich. Yeah, but I'd die ten years earlier. We may only be decades away from figuring out how to end aging, or how to upload our consciousness to immortal android bodies. If I die ten years early, I might miss out on that. You know that stuff would only be for rich people, right? I've got $8,000 in an IRA.

Don't you see, Rosencrantz? We're ALL foreigners to each other. Show me your papers! (This cartoon was originally published on 2012-06-01).

There are better ways to assert your individuality, Clyde. I know that, fool. That's why I'm ridin' my bike against traffic at noon, and crossin' just outside the crosswalk at 12:15.

Caption: Y'know the interesting thing about cologne? The same cologne smells different on different people. Maybe it chemically interacts with an individual's ph or what not. On one man, it can smell like an ocean breeze, but on another man the same cologne might smell like six-year-old egg salad. Why are you telling me this? No reason. I'm not wearing cologne.

Caption: So, Mr. Mousavi. Leader of Iran's "Green Revolution." The entire free world has invested its hopes for a better Middle East in you. … Why? Because I share the same yearning for individual liberty as you, I suppose. In the words of your own Founding Fathers ... Give me something approximating slightly greater liberty, or give me death!!! Inspiring. We'll be seeking permits for any future protests.

Caption: Ah, come in, my good man. Pastor Goodparson. I want you to meet, er, um …. Lemont. That's it! "Lemont!" Forgive me, my boy. I have so many parishioners that I just can't keep their names straight. You surely are blessed, Reverend. And wise, if only I'd gong to www.ordain-me-quick.com like you did, I'd have more free time to build a larger congregation. Instead, I serve a humble flock that actually respects my ministry. Maybe size isn't everything, Reverend. You shouldn't listen to everything Mrs. Goodparson says, Pastor. She said "There's good in every man." But maybe you've got a point.
