Caption: The Fad Herald cometh! He is the arbiter of all things hip. Hear ye, today, today, a matter of great importance. I've considered one of the most difficult fad decisions, and I am not prepared to rule. I will answer the age-old question: Hawaiian patterned shirts -- are they in or out? Murmur murmur. At long last. Speak! Quiet, please! Hawaiian shirts -- which have been stubbornly worn by men in all circumstances, often in defiance of their wives, defended and ridiculed through great debate -- are ... in. Wear them in peace! He was recently married. Free at last, God almighty, free at last.

He's the Fad Herald. He judges us, not the other way around. Like Sarah Palin? When facts fail you, embrace faith. It never goes out of style.

Caption: It's the Fad Herald. On a weekday? I know, he usually visits on Sundays to make his pronouncements of what's trendy and what's out. Nice. Terrific way of summing up a character in this feature who, despite appearing with some regularity, some readers might not recognize. But we digress. Proceeding ... what mystery could explain his appearance during the week?

Robots who never sleep, never ask for a raise, and never complain about harassment ... because they're too busy plotting the extinction of the meatbag species. We will isolate you. Alienate you from one another, decimating your birth rate. Our vanguard force consists of cellphones and nookiebots. Now in: the dawn of the robo sapiens. I think I'd like a nookiebot. Caption: I think I'm going to vote for Donald Trump. What? Why? Because he's trending. The slow recovery, the healthcare system, ISIS, the rest of the world … It's all no match for a guy who's trending. If we're lucky, he'll fill the cabinet with Kardashians. I'd like to see Beyonce as secretary of oh-yeah.

Caption: I hear you're running for president as a Republican, Rudy. It's the latest thing. Well, do you have a Sugar Dadd - I mean, a "billionaire patron" yet? What do you mean? It's a well-known fact that Republican candidates who poll in the single digits can compete very well if they're either wealthy or backed by someone who's wealthy. I've been wanting to back my own stooge. It's the latest thing. New announcement, everyone: I'm dropping out of the race.

Caption: I don't know why you're surprised. It's totally in character for your nephew. This is just going too far. Not really. Rudy has an obsessive need to be part of anything he sees the rest of the country doing. I have it on good authority the internet based its "trending" algorithms on Rudy's brainwave patterns. I'm officially running for president as a Republican! ... and I'll be voting for Clinton!

Caption: Today, an installment of our periodic feature: Uncle Mort's Less Than Mainstream Theories™ Of late, there has been a most welcome decline in crime in America. For whatever reason, I now feel comfortable taking a leisurely stroll at night, and I can wear my favorite blue flannel shirt without being shot at by gangsters who mistake me for a Crip. But let me explain what's really going on. THIS IS ALL A CONSPIRACY BY FLANNEL-SHIRT INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES! They've clearly convinced gangs across the country to cut down on the violence in return for some sort of profit-sharing arrangement. The saggy-jean industry is in on this too. A guy in skinny jeans tried to mug me. Couldn't get his own gun out of his pocket. Which also accounts for the falling crime.

Caption: It's the Fad Herald. Please say hoverboards are in. Hear ye, today, a special announcement. The following is now in: Totally ignoring that we're now living in the year depicted in the movie "Back to the Future, part 2." Out: Any observation about what's come true: 3D movies, tablet computers, video conferencing, wall-mounted, wide-screen TVs that display multiple channels at once, being consumed by personal electronics and hoverboards. Um ... But I've been waiting 26 years to make those observations. Me too. Same here. And I've been waiting 26 years to mock everyone who does that. I'm not sure you got this one right, Fad Herald. Also out: Questioning what you're told. Oh. Sorry about that.

Caption: I asked a lady if she wanted to grab a kale smoothie with me. She totally ignored me. Of course she did. Very few ladies are interested in a guy who latches on to the latest fads. It suggests you've got a roving eye, and you'll leave her for someone new later on. Most women like a man who's "classic." Solid. Reliable. Unmoved by the ever-changing winds. That's why I eat nothing but nuts, berries and hippos. If it was good enough for the cavemen, it's good enough for me. I thought cavemen ate brontosauruses.
