You remember when Generation X was a big deal, Susan? Good times. Yeah. We had a good run. From break dancing all the way through the Macarena. What are you getting at? The Macarena, Susan. It ended the reign of our entire generation. In one fell swoop, we descended into irrelevance ... and we deserved to. If you want me to stop doing it at parties, just come out and say so.

Tyrone, do you recall the days when we panhandled outside the theater? Of course, Rosencrantz. I remember them vividly. They were performing "King Lear," the Shakespeare play about the angry, vain old king who slowly descended into madness. He carved up the kingdom and gifted it to his children. He gave the largest piece to the daughter who flattered him the most. What happened at the end of the play? I don't know. Why do you ask? Spare change?

I never asked what you and Ace Peerless did for Valentine's Day. We competed. I surprised him with a portrait of us that I painted … and he surprised me by sending a white horse to take me to the beach, where the Candorville Philharmonic performed an original composition Ace had written for me. At the crescendo, which was times to greet the sunset, Ace descended from the sky on a hang glider, accompanied by a flock of doves and eagles. Vancouver and I Skyped and exchanged heart emojis. I'll never know who Ace trained those birds to make that huge heart formation.

There's death in the air, Clyde. I wonder if this is what the British felt when their empire began to die. TIME. Tell me, might those poor beggars the Romans have felt this very way? Blimey! When the noble Babylonians didst descend, couldst they have suffered thusly? Dang. This stinks. (Originally published on 9/30/10). |

Susan, don’t you remember how I was when I was a kid? Now I felt it was my fault my dad left? I have to marry Roxanne, Susan. I won't let this kid grow up without a dad even if it means I'll descend into a putrid abyss of misery, anger and regret. A dark and musty cave of despair. Yeah, that is gonna be one well-adjusted kid. |
